DAVID Arevalo

Costume Design/Technology

I am a Texas born, Queer, Mexican, costume maker, designer, artist, and educator. My work centers personal authenticity and the languages of bodies, materials, and storytelling, and translates these elements into three dimensions. My practice is grounded in collaboration, slow process, and the transformation of ideas, objects, and expectations. I’m compelled to tell stories that focus on the lives and histories of communities that have found themselves underserved by the American artistic canon. I have worked as a professional freelance Draper/Tailor at the Santa Fe Opera, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Fulton Theatre, and Merrimack Repertory Theatre, among others. My work as a maker artist has been highlighted in American Theatre Magazine and Unbuttoned: The Art and Artists of Theatrical Costume Design. I’ve designed costumes for Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, the Queen City Opera, and The Civilians R&D Group, among others. I am a first generation college graduate and hold a BA from the University of Texas at Austin and an MFA in Stage Design from Northwestern University. In addition to work as a designer and maker, I am an assistant professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of Texas at Austin and head of the MFA program in Costume Technology.
